AMERIGO VESPUCCI: SWINDLER OR SAINT?
By Charles Rammelkamp
For centuries, historians have assassinated Amerigo Vespucci's character because the explorer supposedly stole Christopher Columbus' glory-but nothing could be farther from the truth. Indeed, the most that Amerigo can be accused of is having been a greater inspiration than Columbus to the imagination of Europe, as it came to grips with the implications of a "New World."

ROANOKE: RALEIGH'S LOST COLONY
By Ellen Seiden
An ill-fated settlement vanishes ino thin air, leaving as the only clue to its disappearance the cryptic message "CROATOAN" carved into a tree. This tale of pirates, brave settlers, the drive for riches, treacherous storms, and abandonment could well have sprung from the fertile imagination of a dramatist, yet it is part of the saga of Roanoke, England's first colony in North America.
