The Mysterious Murder of Christopher Marlowe
by Scott McCreaOn May 30, 1593, playwright Christopher Marlowe was stabbed through the eye with a dagger at the age of 29. Some said he was killed in a tavern brawl; others said that he had sexually propositioned a servingman and had been murdered for his "lewd love." Although what really happened will probably never be known, in the past decade, researchers have unearthed information about the people involved in Marlowe's death that suggests that the murder may have actually been politically motivated.
The Tale of Two Theatres: The Rose and the Globe
by Michelle SantosThe word of Elizabethan theater was murky, convoluted, an peppered with nefarious characters. Welcome to the world of the Rose Playhouse and the Globe Theatre.
Determining the Identity of the Bard: William Shakespeare or the Earl of Oxford?
by Jonathan DixonWhenever the mystery of the Shakespeare authorship is brought up, traditional scholars routinely protest that no one doubted Shakespeare's authorship during his lifetime. By "Shakespeare" they mean, of course, William Shaksper of Stratford-on-Avon. However, over the centuries, other candidates for the secret author of Shakespeare's plays and poetry have been offered. Yet despite this nagging dissatisfaction with the traditional attribution, no alternative has withstood close scrutiny, except one: Edward deVere, the 17th Earl of Oxford.
