Veronica Franco was one of the most well-known and sought-after courtesans in 16th-century Venice. She was also a prolific poet, a mother, lover, and defender of women's rights. With a freedom not afforded to married Venetian women, Veronica influenced powerful figures in the male-dominated society of Venice as she attemlpted to be seen as an "honest courtesan," a prostitute who made money with her mind rather than on her back.
