The Medieval Craft of Bookmaking

A black-robed monk sits alone in his dank stone cell. By the meager light of a lone oil lamp, he draws ornate Latin words onto the page before him with pious care. This is the image of medieval book production that most of us the Middle Ages, this image hardly does justice to the complex enterprise of medieval bookmaking.

Manuscript illuminations is most beautifully displayed in the thousands of vellum leaves from medieval Books of Hours that still survive today in museums and private collections throughout the world. Althought torn from their original bound format, these solo gems still provide information about not only their original owners but also about the workshops in which they were created.
