The Fantastical Pageantry of Tudor England
by Anjuli MacDonald of ClanranaldFrom the pageant of the Chateau Vert of Henry VII's court in 1522 to Robert Dudley's tour de force at Kenilworth Castle in 1575, most Tudor aristocratic entertainment revolved around tableaux and allegories. Firmly lodged in the medieval mystery plays, such pageants sought to align entertainment with education, and celebration with worship. From coronations to Twelfth Night, the Tudors wove a special magic into their holidays and even their religious rites.
The Morality and Medievalism of Middle-Earth
by Richard MackenzieJohn Ronald Reul Tolkien (1892-1973) succeeded in creating an entire world in his famous Lord of the Rings series. In combining his passion for philology and linguistics, medieval history, and Christianity, he created a powerful story that has been viewed as an allegory, a fable, and a warning to its readers. But above all, it has entertained millions of readers in the more than 50 years since its creation.
Fairy Beliefs During the Renaissance
by Michelle SantosLegends about glamorous fairies, woodland elves, and frightening bogies can be found in some of the earliest literature of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. These stories, dating from as early as the 11th century, are cultural myths that have been passed down by word of mouth. Yet fairy lore, by its nature, is a shifting entity, and the Renaissance was a time of scientific thought, so there are few serious treatises on the subject. Rather, its origins must be unearthed from popular literature of the time.
