Falconry: The Sport of Kings

The importance of falcons in medieval society originally stemmed from their utility as food gatherers. Prior to the invention of the shotgun, there were few resources for capturing and killing wild game. So harnessing the predatory skill of birds of prey provided a perfect medium for "bringing home the bacon." Thus, falconry--the sport of hungting with trained birds--was born.

The Imaginative Animals of the Medieval Bestiary

Quite simply, bestiaries refer to books that were produced during the Middle Ages that descsribed animals, both real and fictitious, accompanied by imaginative illustrations. Although bestiaries dealt with the natural world, they were never meant to be scientific texts. In fact, whether the animals were real or imaginary mattered little; rather, the characteristics attributed to each animal made them suitable metaphors for Christian virtues or vices.
