Free Men at War: The Swiss Pikes
For 200 years, Swiss pikemen were the most feared infantry in Europe. Eventually they spawned imitators, but none could match their ferocious fighting style. Only the widespread use of gunpowder brought about the end of their age. But before they were through, the Swiss had annihilated knightly armies, professional militaries, and rival bands of pike-armed infantry, including the French troops of Charles the Bold.
Guiscard: The Norman Terror
In a medieval world racked with violence and destruction, the Normans were great practitioners of both. Although the most famous was William the Conqueror, the greatest of them was Robert Guiscard d'Hauteville. In his decades-long war for power in Italy and the Balkans, Guiscard triumphed in pitched battles and long sieges, using remorseless terror to bring local populations under his control. By the time of his death in 1085, Guiscard was the most powerful ruler in the central Mediterranean.
