Historical Queen Elizabeth I
by
Susan Doran
$22.00 / NYU Press / 2003
As part of the British Library's Historic Lives series, Susan
Doran has written a brief but detailed biography of Elizabeth
I. At 144 pages, it can be read in one or two afternoons. Her
concise style is easy to read and contains details of Elizabeth's
christening and a review of the question of her legitimacy that
generally remains uncovered in more massive biographies. Although
Elizabeth did not often expose her personal views, the author's
attempts to analyze her private feelings are not intrusive.
Author Susan Doran concludes the book with a look at how both
the public and historians view Elizabeth's reign. Modern historians
are more negative about Elizabeth and credit her ministers for
her successes, but Doran maintains that she did the best she
could within the restrictions and political limitations of her
age.
Queen Elizabeth I is also well illustrated with portraits
and engravings of the time, as well as reproductions of Elizabeth's
own writing, all of which provide a solid introduction to the
life and reign of the Virgin Queen, and a refreshing alternative
to the lengthier biographies currently available at one's local
bookstore.
