Miscellaneous The Amateur Historian's Guide: Medieval and
Tudor London
by
Sarah Valente Kettler and Carole Trimble
$20.00 / Capital Books / 2001
The search has ended, and the Holy Grail of Guidebooks has been
discovered! With both wit and detail, The Amateur Historian's
Guide to Medieval and Tudor London presents a trip down Drury
Lane which enthralls, amuses, and causes the reader to drool
with longing for an airline ticket and a double-decker pass.
The book is organized in an easy-to-grasp manner, and fetches
one hither and yon through Lnodon so vividly that even the armchair
traveler feels almost satisfied at journey's end-though only
a fool would be content to simply enjoy the book from the dullness
of the local library.
The "Ghost Alert" and "While you're in the neighborhood"
sidebars are tantalizing treats, and trivial bits entitled "Did
you know?" are tellingly written and cleverly placed throughout
the book. Entire sections of historical review-such as "Prisoners
of the White Tower" and thumbnail sketches of most of the
major royals-are also valuable beyond their simple fascination.
And for the purely practical traveler, addresses, phone numbers,
hours of operation, admission fees, and tips on each landmark
are provided in abundance.
However, lest readers think that I have allowed the exceptional
nature of this book to overwhelm my critical faculties, I will
add that at least in two places I found mistakes in historical
fact (both of them incorrect dates). Beyong these minor flaws,
however, this book provides a most enjoyable ramble through medieval
and Tudor London.
