Historical Warriors of the Dark Ages
by
Jennifer Laing
$29.95 / Sutton Publ. / 2000
The first of a three-volume series on the Warriors of Europe,
Warriors of the Dark Ages provides encyclopedic information
on the early barbarian tribes, including the Huns, Visigoths,
Vandals, Ostrogoths, and Franks, all of whom brought about the
fall of the Roman Empire and ravaged Europe during the fourth,
fifth, and sixth centuries. Given what sketchy information exists
about these tribes, this is no small accomlishment.
The chapters davoted to the different tribes are subdivided into
sections which cover imporant events and people. For instance,
"The Siege of Adrianople" and "The Skirmish at
Constantinople" recount battles between the Goths and the
Romans, while several subsections are devoted to Attila the Hun.
Laing also devotes a chapter to the Saxons, Danes, Frisians,
and Angles, the barbarian tribes of the British Isles.
Complete with maps, color plates, and photographs of artifacts
from the era, and written in clear descriptive language, Warriors
of the Dark Ages provides a solid understanding of the origins
and deeds of the legendary warrior tribes which flourished fo
as long as a century before becoming absorbed into the culture
around them.
