The Camelot's Honor by Sarah Zettel $13.95 / Luna / 2005 Second in Sarah Zettel’s Arthurian book series, For Camelot’s Honor explores the complicated realm of Welsh/Briton politics and customs, all under the banner of an unlikely relationship between Sir Geraint, nephew of King Arthur, and Elen, daughter of Welsh landholder Lady Adara. Elen is a spirited woman whose power contrasted with the stability of Sir Geraint, the second to the youngest son of King Lot and Queen Morgause. The lives of Elen and Geraint entwine when Elen’s homestead is besieged by neighboring lord Urien, who then claims the land as his own. When Elen fights back, she is changed magically into a hawk. Geraint, hearing of the plight of Elen and her people, ventures to try and save her and the land. Geraint and Elen’s convoluted relationship begins with a forced marriage ceremony but ends with true love. Throughout the novel, their relationship is seasoned with a heavy dose of intrigue. This novel takes place in Wales, where the land of the fey is tangible in every mist and over every bridge. Despite the fascinating but shifting fairy worlds, the end of the novel drags slightly when it becomes obvious that, unless on the run, the pair has little in common. Regardless, these two undergo horrific, painful, and often deadly adventures to win back Elen’s land and her heart. And, naturally, being an Arthurian novel, they succeed. An enjoyable romp through a mystical landscape, this book is a fresh addition to the Arthurian mythos. Full of rich details and fantasy settings, For Camelot’s Honor engages all the senses and is rife with action. Complex without being complicated, this is the perfect book to wile away a few hours, curled up next to a roaring fire. — Michelle Santos |
