Wives and Daughters: The Women of the Sixteenth Century England
Do you know who
the English woman was who founded a college at Oxford (Mary Sidney,
Countess of Pembroke), or the 4' woman who wed a 6'6" yeoman
and was imprisoned for her marriage (Mary Grey the youngest sister
of Lady Jane Grey, the nine-day queen)? The answers aren't covered
in the usual history books but can be found in Wives and Daughters.
Most history texts mention women as an accessory to a famous
man, but this book features brief biographies of hundreds of
women who had a part in the shaping of the 16th century, from
the reign of Henry VII through the reign of Elizabeth I. Each
detailed entry provides birth and death dates, the connection
or impact each woman had on history, and her family connections
to other people in history. Each woman is also cross-referenced
by her maiden name and her married name or title, if necessary.
