In Search of Dracula: The History of Dracula & Vampires

by Raymond TMcNally and Radu Florescu

$14.95 / Houghton Mifflin / 1994

If you are looking for an overall introduction to the life of Vlad the Impaler, aka Dracula, this book covers every possible aspect of this infamous Prince, including his history, Bram Stoker's life and novel, and Dracula in both film and fiction.

Written by two of the most well-respected historians on Dracula legends, this 300-page book is filled with interesting photos and illustrations of Vlad and his castles, as well as Stoker sites of interest. Although the text is well-written and makes interesting reading, perhaps the most useful parts of this book are its appendices.

In the appendices, not only have the authors included maps of Romania, historical chronologies, a genealogical tree of the Dracula family and an incredibly thorough bibliography, it also includes the text of ancient manuscriptstranslated by the authorsa comprehensive list of international Dracula films produced between 1896 and 1992, and a travel guide for Britain and Romania for Dracula enthusiasts who wish to visit Dracula sites in person!

Highly recommended, this easy-to-read piece of scholarly writing will leave you yearning for more.
