King Authur The Eagle and the Sword
by A. A. Attanasio
$6.50 / Harper Prism / 1998
A rather unconventional retelling of the Camelot story, this
sequel to The Dragon and the Unicorn begins with Merlin's
quest to guide a young Arthur to Camelot to claim his rightful
place as King of Britain. Merlin has fostered the child Arthur
with Kyner, a Christian Celtic chiefain who raised the boy with
his own son, Cei. But Merlin is troubled to find that Pendragon's
son Aquila Regalis Thor (the Eagle of Thor, or Arthor) has grown
to be a violoent, bloodthirsty young man who finds joy only in
his battle prowess.
When Kyner entrusts Arthor with the safe return of the prisoner
Fen, son of the Saxon King Aelle, Arthor becomes enmeshed in
a series of misadventures which tries both his strengthand character.
The events unfold into a mythical epic depicting the frenzied
struggle between Celts, invading Saxons, and their gods, as well
as the vestiges of old Roman Britons.
Gods, angels, demons, fairies, an impoverished Aquitanian lady,
vampiric lamias, and the vengeful sorceress Morgeu the Fey, all
add to the spectacle of this fantasy. In the end, all forces
meet in an astounding metaphysical conflict that can only leave
the reader wondering if Merlin will survive the powerful encounter
and if Arthor can recongnize Merlin's guidance in order to recapture
the majesty that is his destiny.
This unique version of the legendary Arthurian tale artfully
recreates a time in history when the old pagan religions of Rome
and the nature-worshipping Britons were slowly melding into the
beginnings of a Christian Europe. Science fiction and fantasy
enthusiasts may well appreciate this unique retelling of the
Arthurian legend.
