Elizabeth 1: Ruler and Legend

by Clark Hulse

$25.00 / Univ. of Illinois Press / 2003

Published for Chicago's Newberry Library to accompany their recent exhibit of Elizabethan memorabilia, this book provides a brief biography on Elizabeth that focuses on her legend, from the symbols incorporated in her portraits to her depiction in modern film. It is not an overly scholarly analysis, but simply touches on all the bases.

The book is lavishly illustrated with pictures of exhibit items that are relevant to the Virgin Queen, including portraits, maps, manuscripts, and music sheets, all enhanced by numerous sidebars about various aspects of the Elizabethan era, such as court music, theater, humanism, and the queen's progress.

Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend is a lovely book that goes beyond a biography to give a sense of the time. It would serve equally as an introduction to the Virgin Queen or an addition to one's collection of Elizabeth biographies.
