Miscellaneous Kirith Kirin
by Jim Grimsley
$16.00 / Meisha Merlin / 2000
Athryn Ardfalla and Kirith Kirin have exchanged the crown for
thousands of years, each taking a turn as ruler while the other
is rejuvenated in Arthen forest. But now Queen Athryn has turned
to a magician of the dark arts to preserve her youth and her
crown. Kirith Kirin, though he himself is safe in Arthen, nust
find a way to save the people from the shadow that the magican
has brought to the land. When he summons young Jessex to serve
in his shrine, he soon realizes that the boy is the only one
who can defeat Athry's magician.
In Kirith Kirin, the story of Jessex's coming of age,
author Jim Grimsley has created a world rich in magic, from the
great towers and cities, to the forest of Arthen. The well-realized
characters are easy to love, cheer for, or hate. But as Grimsley
attempts to flesh out his world, he ends up providing excessive
historical and geographical details. Unfortuately, the final
product is overly long and clutered with extraneous information
that detracts from a good yarn.
Yet despite Kirith Kirin's flaws, Grimsley's fantastic
writing is enough to sustain any reader's intererst. Even the
most mundane events are made interesting by Grimsley's style,
and in the end, this flowing writing makes the book one worth
reading,
