Historical Magnificent Corpses
by Anneli Rufus
$13.95 / Marlowe & Co.
/ 1999
Journalist, poet, and travel writer Anneli Rufus has combined
her various talents to produce a story about the surviving bits
and pieces of the saints which remain scattered across Europe.
In a mix of first and third person, present and past tense, and
occasional dialog, Magnificent Corpses sounds, at times,
like a travel book, and at other times like a biegraphy or even
a novel.
The author covers the lives and deaths of saints from early medieval
times to the 20th century, the process of making them saint,
and the shrines where their remains are now housed. But the author
also provides snippets about the people who visit these shrines
and the way they perform what-from an outsider's point of view-seems
a curious bit of ritual.
The result is a volume that, for all its eccentricity, has the
potential to entertain as well as enlighten. While not everyone
will like this book, it does offer a unique slant on the subject.
