The Medieval Messenger
$6.95 / Usborne Publ. / 1996 The Medieval Messenger takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to reporting medieval news. Its clever headlines and attention to the finer details of medieval living is sure to entertain. This magazine-like full-color publication is formatted like a newspaper (dated Friday, October 13, 1349) reporting the news of yesteryear with headlines such as "Mystery Plague Rocks Europe; We've Been Bad, Says Bishop," "England Crumbles as Normans Conquer," and "What's New at the Spanish Inquisition?" For added laughs, readers will find a number of ads which sell everything from snoods to woollie hose, columns such as Lady Penelope's Q&A (answering questions such as to where to obtain a new midden), personal ads, and astrology readings. Medieval paintings and woodcuts, as well as modern illustrations, add graphical impact. Unfortunately, The Medieval Messenger doesn't really get down to the nitty-gritty history and at 32 pages, you are left wishing it were longer. Nevertheless, the short articles make for a good introduction to the Middle Ages. Any erstwhile medievalist will thoroughly enjoy this witty look at the times. —Mistress Isa |
