The Peasants' Revolt: England's Failed Revolution of 1381

by Alastair Dunn

$22.00 / Tempus / 2004

Peasants may not be the most romantic aspect of the Middle Ages but in reality, the people who worked the land and grew the food not only provided the basis for medieval society, but comprised over ninety percent of the population. In this concise but thorough volume, Alistair Dunn explores one remarkable episode in the history of the common people—the Peasant's Revolt of 1381.

Beginning by describing the conditions that feudal tenants lived under in England, Dunn first runs through the events leading up to the revolt, such as how the Black Death disrupted the rural economy and led to increased economic opportunities for laborers, how the aristocracy attempted to reassert its control with restrictive laws, and how the Hundred Years' War in France led to increased taxation. All of this came to a head in 1381, when men from Kent and Essex rose up, burned administrative records in their native manors, and marched on London, where they disrespected their betters, killed officials, demanded what they regarded as the restoration of their ancient rights, and were finally only dispersed by a combination of luck and leadership.

Dunn provides a good summary on a significant episode in history. As such, this book will find a welcome home in the library of those with an interest in late 14th-century England or those who just would like a general introduction to the subject.
