Miscellaneous Rakkety Tam
by Brian Jacques
$23.99 / Penguin Books / 2004
"After belting his
blades on, Tam hefted his shield and fixed the Sgian Dhu in his
cap. 'Up ye come, Doogy Plumm, this is the life for us. Marching
with real fighters who know what they're doin,' an, do it right!'"
Author Brian Jacques could not have chosen better words to display
the fearless Rakkey Tam MacBurl, the hero of Rakkety Tam,
a young-adult book that transports readers to a make-believe
world of sword fights, thieves, and an unfulfilled prophecy.
Tam, along with his friend Wild Doogy Plumm, a Scottish borderer
and a Highlander, have been ordered by their king and queen to
track down a flag that was stolen by the evil Gulo. They have
also come in search of Gulo's brothe rand the legendary Walking
Stone, a mysterious artifact with a supposed special power.
Little does Tam know, however, that by pursuing the flag, he
just might have stumbled upon his destiny, for fortress Redwall
has become Gulo's next target, and a cry for help from two maidens
in the fortress convinces Tam where his duty lies. But what gives
this tale an even deeper twist is that Tam and Doogy are squirrels
and their friends and foes are also animals!
Rich in plot and authentic Scottish culture, Rakkety Tam is
an adventurous tale that will be enjoyed by young and old alike.
