To Shield the Queen

by Fiona Buckley
ISBN: 0684-83841-9
$21 / Scribner / 1997

To Shield the Queen introduces Mistress Ursula Blanchard to the intrigues of Queen Elizabeth I's court. Mistress Blanchard, who has come to court to serve Queen Elizabeth, becomes an attendant to Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley, Elizabeth's favorite and hopeful future royal husband. Amy is dying of breast cancer and is terrified of assassination by her husband. When she is found dead at the bottom of her own stairs, Mistress Blanchard tries to learn if Amy's death was suicide, accident, or murder, and stumbles across more than one treasonous conspiracy to remove Queen Elizabeth from the throne.

The texture added by Buckley on details of dress, travel, foods, and homes in this mystery novel are well researched and add to the possibility that this tale just might not be fiction. To Shield the Queen is the first in hopefully a long series of mysteries involving Mistress Ursula Blanchard and Queen Elizabeth.
