the Queen introduces
Mistress Ursula Blanchard to the intrigues of Queen Elizabeth
I's court. Mistress Blanchard, who has come to court to serve
Queen Elizabeth, becomes an attendant to Amy Robsart, wife of
Robert Dudley, Elizabeth's favorite and hopeful future royal
husband. Amy is dying of breast cancer and is terrified of assassination
by her husband. When she is found dead at the bottom of her own
stairs, Mistress Blanchard tries to learn if Amy's death was
suicide, accident, or murder, and stumbles across more than one
treasonous conspiracy to remove Queen Elizabeth from the throne.
