Renaissance Swordsmanship: The Illustrated Use of Rapiers and Cut-and-Thrust Swords by John Clements $25 / Paladin Press / 1997 Swashbuckler films like The Three Musketeers have generated many myths and misconceptions about swords and swordsmanship. So author John Clements attempts to dispell these misconceptions in Renaissance Swordsmanship which serves as both a general reference and an instructional guide for advanced and beginning sword enthusiasts, students of military history, and martial artists. A valuable compilation of historical and never-before-published material, Renaissance Swordsmanship includes information from rare 16th-and 17th-century manuscripts from Germany, Italy, France, and Great Britain. The 142-page large-format book is well organized and comprehensive, and includes more than 100 pages of simple form drawings depicting authentic Renaissance sword-fighting techniques, proper gripping, and correct stances. Most all weapon combinations are at least briefly discussed, including rapier and dagger, small sword; buckler, and cloak; cut and thrust swords; and sword and dagger. The text is large (about 12 point type in the intro chapters), reminiscent of elementary school textbooks; not what you'd expect in a book for serious swordsmen. Nevertheless, Renaissance Swordsmanship is well suited as a user's guide for hands-on practice in fencing, contact weapon sparring, and training with historically accurate replicas. —Mistress Isa |
