Historical The Tudors
by Richard Rex
$35.00 / Tempus / 2002
Thumbnail sketches of famous people or events are difficult to
paint well. There are always moments left out or characters glossed
over, which can leave the reader with a feeling that something
is lacking. So it is with The Tudors, a masterful yet
ultimately introductory work on various historical highlights.
To fit an overview of the Tudor Dynasty into 240 pages is a neat
trick in itself, and Rex manages to distill the most important
information on the Tudors, making the complex understandable
without short-changing on character sketches. Thus, readers get
a feel for Tudor England, its politics and culture, and the personalities
of its movers and shakers,
But will the book entice neophytes to delve more deeply? Rex
is a skillful and engrossing writer, choosing his topics with
an eye both to historical value and popular interest. He never
tries to make the reader think that he is including everything
there is to know about this famous royal family, but instead
cleverly leaves his readers wanting more!
This is not a comprehensive history for those already familiar
with the Tudor world, but is a readable, scholary summary of
teh dynasty from Henry VII to Elizabeth I.
