Arms & Armor Medieval Warfare: A History
ed. by Maurice Keen
$17.50 / Oxford / 2000
This book is designed for readers who want to take in the often
detail-saturated histry of medieval warfare in one glup. From
the emergence of the Franks to the widescale introduction of
guns, the story details the practice of war, from the banded
units of local feudal nobility to the massive operations of state-funded
battle. The collection traces advances in arms and armor, such
as the shift from chain to plate mail, the deployment of longbow
and crossbow, and the careful breeding of battle horses. The
Warfare collection also devotes articles to mercenaries,
and, surprisingly, to the question of non-combatants.
The articles contained in this volume are consistently excellent,
with enough anecdote mixed in with the indications of major trends
to make it a satisfying and informative read. If it is unable
to answer the key question of the impluse to warfare and the
almost mystical prestige of battle, it at least offers clear
and encapsulated outline of the history of war during the Middle
Ages, in which the high ideals of warfare became solidified in
the mind of western man.
