The Wives of Henry VIII
$22.95 / Knopf, Inc. / 1992 Lady Fraser has written many books with style and humor on Renaissance royalty, and this book is yet another. There is plenty of substance as well, with Fraser's impeccable research and her remarkable ability to clearly convey complex ideas. Divided into five parts and an epilogue, Fraser uses part four to tell the stories of both Anne of Cleves and Katherine Howarda small disappointment but understandable when you consider that put together, these two queens reigned barely two years. Going beyond the legend and stereotype, The Wives of Henry VIII presents each queen in an evenhanded light. each emerging as a fascinating person. While Fraser is generally objective, she shows a great deal of sympathy to Katherine Howard, the young cousin of Anne Boleyn who was also beheaded in the Tower. Fraser treats Katherine like the precious "old man's jewel" that she was. (Ever the thoughtful husband, Henry sent musicians to the Tower to play for Katherine during her imprisonment). Life is too short to waste on reading cheap writing. Fraser understands this and so delivers a worthwhile discourse. —Maggie Boleyn |
