The Writer's Guide to Everyday Life in Renaissance England

by Kathy Lynn Emerson

$18.99 / Writer's Digest / 1996

Anyone interested in the daily life of English people during the Renaissance will find this book an excellent general resource.

Everyday Life in Renaissance England covers all aspects of day-to-day life in England during the period 1485-1649, from the reign of Henry VII through the reign of Charles I. Its 280 pages are grouped into three sections, Everyday Life, Government and War, and Renaissance Society. These are divided into chapters like Clothes and Accessories; Food and Drink; Crime and Punishment; Coins, Money and How Much Things Cost; Life in London and Other Cities; and Witches, Magic, Necromancy and Superstition. Most chapters consist of a general overview of the subject, along with glossary of terms and/or a specialized timeline.

Intended to give writers an overview of daily life in Renaissance England, this book contains a wealth of information that could take an awful lot of research time for anyone to uncover. Details on subjects like gun control, European currency, and slang can go a long way toward rounding out characters, whether they be in a story or wandering around a Renaissance faire.

—Capt. Mikal Warchola of Carpathia
