A collection of "Celtic inspired, contemporary, and traditional
compostions," this CD is an acoustic guitar showcase, including
work performed on mandolin, hammered dulcimer, doumbek, and congas.
Caledon Wood, however, tends to dwell in the contemporary, giving the
entire album a New Age feel. While there may be some Celtic and traditional
inspiration here, it barely shines through the modern compositional
work and contemporary instrumentation. Nevertheless, this CD does have
a freshness
which, coupled with compositions played by so many divergent instruments,
keeps the listener enticed for the duration.
Especially nice is the song "Branches," a fantasticly moody
mandolin and acoustic guitar piece. Likewise, "Sligo Creek" is
a simple but passionate song while "Funky C Funky Do" provides
the funkiness that the name implies.
This album is by no means a recreation of historical music; rather
Caledon Wood offers a fine display of composition with historical tradition
in
mind.
