Celtic Cross
Richard Searles

In this superb album, guitarist/ composer Richard Searles brings together an eclectic selection of music and instruments to create an imaginative journey through five ancient Gaelic lands. Although the majority of the music is Scottish, the album does include a haunting Welsh tune, several delightful pieces from Breton and Galicia, as well as one Carolan tune, "Sir Festus Burke." The Scottish tunes range from the energetic "Bedding of the Bride" and "A Thousand Curses on Love," to the gentle songs "The Fyket," and "The White Houses of Sheildaig."

In Celtic Cross, Searles combines modern and period instruments for some unique effects. In use are the hurdy-gurdy, a French harpsichord, classical and steel strung guitars, recorders and a string quartet. Although this choice is not historically correct, the instruments give a rich, orchestral texture to the music.
