Celtic Cry: The Heart of a Martyr

(ASIN: B00006I0B7)
Within the scope of the Renaissance,
most everyone has heard of the Reformation. Much is known about the
Catholics and the
Protestants, with such characters as Henry VIII, Lady Jane Grey, or
Martin Luther coming to mind. What is far less known is the story of
the Scottish
Covenanters (1560-1680).
The Scottish Covenanters defied the English monarchy as head of the
Christian church in England, acknowledging only one High King: Jesus.
This came
at a time when anyone refusing to honor the king received personal "cleansing" through
torture and death. The Scottish Covenanters refused to give such privilege
to the crown and were hunted down, tormented, and executed-all in the
name of Christ.
Celtic Cry is a musical tribute to those determined to remain true
to their religious convictions. The tracks incorporate some Celtic
flavor-and
are expertly produced-though not what one expects from a Celtic album.
Although the style is described as being inspirational-and while the
uillean pipes, bodhran, and penny whistle make brief musical appearances-the
instrumentation on this CD is primarily composed of bass guitar, modern
percussion, and full orchestra.
Even so, the artists Matthew Ward, Charles Billingsley, Scott Krippayne,
and Shannon Wexelberg perform outstanding, soulful solos, duets, and
ensemble pieces. Prize among them is the first track "Welcoming
Hills," as the lyrics evoke the imagery of the heather on the hills
of the Scottish moors. "Rest In You" is an encouraging song,
masterfully sung by Shannon Wexelberg, and composed in memory of John
Dick, who was sentenced to the gallows in 1683. The lyrics to all of
the songs are stirring and the liner notes are filled with the touching
history behind each track.
While the full orchestra and bass guitar may not be truly Celtic in
flavor, Celtic Cry is nonetheless an encouraging and contemplative
album.
