Dance of the Renaissance
Richard Searles
Richard Searles, along with Earth Tone Music,
has created a variety of eclectic albums of early and traditional music.
Here he has given 16
early dances a modern voice while retaining the feel of the period. Drawn
from Mediterranean sources, it is easy to feel the Spanish rhythms and
warmth in "Canarios" by Gaspar Sanz, or hear the Italian charms
in the eight Praetorius dances. Also included on the album are traditional
tunes such as "I Wonder as I Wander" and the French piece, "We
Sing in Celebration."
The instruments used are as varied as the music. Beside Searles on classic
and steel strung guitar, is Patricia Mabee on the harpsichord and Michael
Kibbe on the oboe. Although the modern versions of these instruments
add an unusual flavor to the music, the harpsichord was first developed
in the 14th century, while the oboe was first made in the 16th century
as a less noisy, double reed version of the shawm.
Certainly a recommended tape, the dances in this album are all stately,
more appropriate for courtly affairs rather than street dancing. |
