Sue Richards, four-time
U.S. Scots Harp Champion, presents an extensive collection of traditional
and contemporary Scottish and Irish waltzes, reels and marches in Hazel
Grove. In this CD, Richards is joined by an impressive number of musicians,
including Karen Ashbrook on hammered dulcimer and pennywhistle, Billy
McComiskey on button accordion and John Quigg on the Scottish snare
drum.
The harp throughout the album stays in perfect balance with the accompanying
instruments. Since the arrangements tend to be on the delicate side,
the number of instruments for each selection in limited. Especially
effective is the use of the button accordion, the viola da gamba, and
the dulcimer.
The music on this album covers a wide range of moods, and styles. For
example, Richard's original works include a waltz named for her Scots-Irish
mother, "Mrs. Abbott, and a charming tune dedicated to the late,
Speaker of the House, "Tip O'Neill," paired with a "Washington
Hornpipe." The traditional selections include a lament for "Brian
Boru," in a set with "The Halting March," and "The
King of Laois." To round out the Irish music are three Carolan
and Scottish tunes. Overall, Hazel Grove delivers a truly enjoyable
collection
of Celtic songs. |
