Karma
Kamelot
Noise Records
(N03452)
If there was a band who defined
melodic metal, Kamelot would be on the top of the list, as their
melodic song structures and harmonious
rhythms have gained them international acclaim in the world of
Power Metal.
Kamelot creates another masterpiece with this album, proving that
Power Metal can be intelligent as well as thought-provoking. Each
song in this album describes how the decisions we make ultimately
affect our lives. (Hence, the album's name, Karma.)
The soft instrumental piece "Regalis Apertura" opens the
album, an Indian sound fused with Celtic undertones that is in stark
contrast to the blazingly fast "Forever," the lyrics of
which describe a love that was torn apart too soon and the longing
to be with those who have passed on.
The album continues with the ballad "Don't You Cry," an
ode to the departed father of lead guitarist Thomas Youngblood. Using
falsettos to enhance the emotional subject matter, vocalist Roy Khan's
voice shines on this track.
The album closes with "Elizabeth," a chilling piece based
on Elizabeth Báthory, a 16th-century aristocrat who is said
to have killed over 500 young women, so that she could bathe in their
blood and keep herself looking young. The song's lyrics present an
emotional look into her psyche as well as showcase Kahn's dramatic
voice. Kahn puts great expression into his vocal delivery, enunciating
each word with enthusiasm and charm.
With excellent production values and haunting imagery, Karma sets
a standard of excellence that will be hard to follow.
