Legacy of Kings
HammerFall
Nuclear Blast
(NB 335-2)
From the cold, distant shores
of Sweden comes Hammerfall, a band which single-handedly revived
the metal scene in Europe. Ofter
refered to as "medieval metal," Hammerfall's speed metal
assaul is laden with clear production values, dueling lead guitars,
and lyrical themes that range from hunting dragons to following one's
fate.
The album begins with a thundering drum solo that leads into "Heeding
the Call," a rapid metal song with impressive druming and tasteful
guitar stutters. Other solid tunes include the title track, "Legacy
of Kings," and "Dreamland," which features tight guitar
riffing and an excellent bass groove. Vocalist Joacim Cans' soft
golden voice feels right at home with the music, soaring above the
instruments with good use of his vibrato.
Power and speed are touched upon in neary every song, with catchy
guitar sounds from Oscar Dronjak and Stefan Elmgren.
The album does slow down occasionally with pieces such as "Remember
Yesterday" and the piano-driven "The Fallen One," both
of which feature emotional singing. More important, however, are
the songs' medieval themes, for listening to this CD is like taking
a trip back to the days where chivalry was rampant and the sound
of steel against steel common.
To experience the power of riding into battle with sword held high,
Hammerfall's Legacy of Kings is an excellent vehicle.
