Mad About the Monks
The Monks of Silos
Deutsche Grammophon
This tapeone in a series dedicated
to introducing listeners to various types of musicfeatures a type
of religious chant
called plainchant, plainsong, or more commonly know as the Gregorian
chant. Originating in the early Christian Church, these chants
were the principal music of Western civilization for almost a thousand
years, and recently have seen a surge of popularity in the mainstream
pop music culture.
Four different groups of monks from throughout Europe participated
in this album. Of special note is the 4th-century Ambrosian Chant
from the Milanese church where Aurelius Ambrosius, church father,
poet and diplomat, initiated the first church hymns. Also included
is a song for dedicating a church as well as a truly outstanding
Proper from an Easter Sunday Mass.
The way to best appreciate this tape is to set aside some quiet
time where you can give full attention to the music. In this way
you can
fully get into its haunting rhythms and classic beat.
