Scarborough Faire
Richard Searles
Scarborough Faire is a collection of Renaissance songs presented in
a refreshingly modern setting. Purists might hate this CD because of
the addition of synthesized sounds and untraditional instrumentation,
but these embellishments add dimension to some dusty songs and provides
a nice change of pace.
Shawms, recorders, hurdy gurdy, and other traditional instruments are
performed well on familiar, traditional songs such as "Green-sleeves" and "Scarborough
Faire," as well as works from Praetorius and Obrecht. The familiarity
of this material, combined with the New Age atmosphere, make Scarborough
Faire a nice starter CD for those who have yet to gain an affinity for
Renaissance music.
The recording quality of this album is pristine and full, and the synthesized
elements mix well with the acoustic instruments. The added sound effects
are not overbearing and generally only serve to fill in the background.
Although Scarborough Faire is unconventional, it is this quality which
makes this CD divergent and enjoyable. |
