The Siena
Lute Book
Jacob Heringman
AVIE
(AV0036)
Dating from the late 16th century, The Siena
Lute Book is a manuscript with over 150 lute solos and duets that
may have belonged
to the Medici family. It contains an extensive collection of some
of the finest lute music of the Italian Renaissance, from which
American lutenist Jacob Heringman has selected 26 pieces for this
fine recording.
Heringman is a master technician, a virtuoso musician who can perform
flawlessly some of Europe's most challenging compositions. What
is lacking in some of his earlier records is passion, but here,
Heringman
plays with verve and a renewed sense of purpose, thereby infusing
the tunes with all the warmth and vitality that the composers intended.
The result is a gem of a CD that is technically remarkable, moving,
and, at times, lyrically beautiful. Given the music's distinguished
history, Heringman's latest recording is an important and meaningful
contribution to the Early Music movement as well as a delight for
all lute players and aficionados of genuine renaissance music.
While New Agers and neophytes might find the material challenging,
I warmly recommend The Siena Lute Book to anyone serious about
authentic ancient music. Bravo!
