Songs and Dances of
the Renaissance & Baroque
Minstrelsy
Lyrichord Discs
Minstrelsy showcases music from the 1600s written by some of
the leading composers of that era, such as Dowland, Praetorius,
and Pachelbel,
and their compositions are performed nicely. In addition to the
wide variety of composers this album covers, there are many
pieces from
the Taffel-Consort (1621), a collection of music displaying the
trends that would soon establish the Baroque sound. This
CD is a fine demonstration
of the development of Renaissance music into Baroque.
Strong instrumentals as well as some songs with some wonderful
soprano work, tracks with high consort orchestration, and songs
performed
with just lute and soprano; since the selections mix well with
each other, this provides a pleasing continuity.
Some songs are light and festive, while others are dark and brooding,
offering the listener much to hear. The whole recording is fresh
and playful and well worth adding to your musical collection.
