The Triumphs of Oriana
I Fagiolini
Chandos/Chaconne
(CHAN 0682)
The Triumphs of Oriana is a collection of
25 five-part and six-part madrigals written by 23 English composers,
originally
edited by Thomas Morley in 1601, and skillfully played here by
the English group I Fagiolini. Interspersed throughout the CD are
five
lute pieces played by David Miller.
Even though the sound recording tends to be so soft that, at times,
it is difficult to hear the nuances of the singing, I Fagiolini
achieves a delicate interplay as they make use of the imitative
polyphony
style that characterizes the madrigal poem.
One of the more interesting elements of this CD, however, concerns
the group's research into the origins of this madrigal collection.
The Triumphs of Oriana was thought to have been compiled in honor
of Queen Elizabeth I. But I Fagiolini claims that the madrigals
were composed individually with no master plan for one great compilation.
They also suggest that Morley entered into the project late, taking
it over from John Lyly, and seeing it only through its final press
and publication.
Whatever their original purpose, the The Triumphs of Oriana provides
us with an interesting moment in time. I Fagiolini's ability to
create subtle variations and soft dynamics within the vocal element,
along
with the lively expressiveness of the lute music, make this CD
a cohesive and satisfying whole, and well worth a listen.
