Music from Renaissance Italy
Piffaro, The Renaissance Band
Deutsche Grammophon
The Renaissance Band, Piffaro,
performs a collection of Renaissance wind music, displaying great
playing divergence among
their ranks and showing excellent technical prowess. They offer
music from 17 Italian composers, including "loud" and "soft" wind
consorts as well as performing on some string and percussion instruments.
The quality of the recording is pristine. More room ambiance would
give the whole mix a more energetic live quality, but the dryness
certainly doesn't give a great performance anything to hide behind.
The song arrangements are split up into various logical categorizes,
such as instrumentation and composer, and this tends to blend parts
of this whole work together. So, it is a little difficult to find
the standout material, because the songs progress logically and
not necessarily emotionally. This is especially true since the
body of
music is largely confined to 16 century Italy, so that style pervades
throughout, and this alone will blend the overall aural effect
of the collection.
If you are looking for some well played music from the birthplace
of the Renaissance, you will not be disappointed with this album.
